What was the commitment of the participant and the process of observation?

What kind of questions will be asked in the pre and post interview?
​Questions in the interview will be similar to questions associated with a professional observation cycle as determined by HIDOE. Responses were not evaluated, though they were analyzed. Interviews include teachers' responses to the following:

PRE-OBSERVATION TEACHER INTERVIEW
  1. Why did you choose to teach this lesson?
  2. What are the learning outcomes for this lesson, and how are they related to the larger learning sequence?
  3. How would you describe this lesson as meaningful, useful, or relevant for students (i.e. communicate the importance of the content)?
  4. What are the big questions are you using to drive student discussion?
  5. How are you planning to check for understanding and assess student outcomes?
  6. How would you describe this lesson as engaging for students?
  7. How do you plan to manage student behavior throughout the lesson, starting with expectations?
ARTIFACT PRESENTATION AND DESCRIPTION
  1. What are the instructional materials you are using for this lesson?
  2. Why did you choose these materials?
  3. What do you like about these materials?
  4. How would you describe these materials as meaningful and relevant to student’s lives?
  5. Are there any changes that would you make to these materials?
 POST-OBSERVATION TEACHER INTERVIEW
  1. How were you effective in communicating the purpose of the lesson?
  2. Which parts of your instructional practice were most effective supporting students to meet the learning objectives? Why?

Pre/Post/Materials Interviews

We aim for complete transparency. Please feel free to contact us at anytime, with any questions.

Who will be using the videos?
​The video library created will be shared with both pre-service and in-service teachers in the state of Hawaii.  The videos will be used by HSTA and other local agencies supporting teacher development. The Hawaii Department of Education will use the videos for professional development. Videos will also be used for research purposes by the faculty and students of University of Hawaii (*this includes graduate student work).  Additionally, the videos may be shared with a wider audience across the internet.

How was this project funded?
​Leeward Community College, Associate of Arts in Teaching Program (AAT) & TAACCCT Workforce Development Grant, US Department of Labor Employment and Training Office (DOLETO)

Who will review and approve final videos?
All videos from each classroom will be reviewed by the classroom teacher, edited by the research video team, and approved by the HIDOE before being licensed for Creative Commons BY (CC BY) and potentially shared with a wider audience. This project has been reviewed and approved by University of Hawaii-Leeward Community College, University of Hawaii Office of Research Compliance, Hawaii Department of Education Superintendent's Office, Hawaii Department of Education Office of Data Governance, and Hawaii State Ethics Commission. 


Will the project follow FERPA rules and regulations?
​All student and teacher participants will provide assent and consent to sharing information. Additionally, all parents and guardians will provide consent for their child to be videotaped. All videos containing student information will be reviewed to comply with all FERPA regulations protecting student’s rights and privacy.
